An early Christian basilica with a restored mosaic floor.
What to see at Agia Trias Basilica
- The basilica has three aisles, with floors of mosaic in geometric, leaf and cross motifs.
- An atrium and narthex lie to the west, and a baptistery with a cross-shaped font to the south.
- A restored mosaic shows two pairs of sandals, one pointing in and one out.
- An inscription names Heracleos as the mosaic's maker.
History of Agia Trias Basilica
- About AD 500
- The basilica is built and its mosaics are laid, in the style of the Antioch workshops.
- Mid-7th century
- Arab raids probably destroy it, and a small church is built to its south.
- 9th–10th century
- That church is destroyed too, and the basilica is never used again.
- 1957
- It is found by chance in Sipahi village, on the Karpaz peninsula.
Visiting Agia Trias Basilica
Allow about half an hour. The basilica is near Sipahi, about 2.8 km east of Yeni Erenköy on the Karpaz peninsula, with the İK.22 road about 200 m away. No car park is mapped nearby and no bus stop within about 500 m.
