The cell where the Ottoman poet Namık Kemal was exiled, 1873–76.
What to see at Namık Kemal Dungeon
- A two-storey Ottoman prison of cut stone, built over the remains of the Venetian Palace.
- The lower cell is one rectangular room under a barrel vault, with a low arched door and two windows on the palace courtyard.
- A steep stone stair rises to the upper room, which has two large windows, a landing and a marble floor.
History of Namık Kemal Dungeon
- 1873
- After his play Vatan yahut Silistre is staged in Istanbul, Namık Kemal is exiled to Cyprus and held here for 38 months.
- 1876
- Murad V pardons him on 3 June, and he returns to Istanbul.
- 1993
- The dungeon becomes a museum; it was rearranged in 2023.
Visiting Namık Kemal Dungeon
Allow about half an hour. The dungeon stands inside the walls of Gazimağusa (Famagusta). A car park is mapped about 50 m away, and no bus stop is mapped within about 500 m.
