The best-preserved gate of Nicosia's Venetian walls.
What to see at Kyrenia Gate and the Nicosia walls
- A round-arched passage cuts through a heavy stone block, its arch ringed with dressed stones.
- Above the arch are a stepped Latin slab dated 1562 and a carved relief, with "GRI" and "1931" cut into the face.
- On the north face a long marble slab carries Mahmud II's Ottoman inscription, and a square guard room with a low dome stands on top.
History of Kyrenia Gate and the Nicosia walls

- Venetians build the gate as Porta del Provveditore, after Francesco Barbaro; its Latin inscription reads 1562.
- 1821
- Under Mahmud II the Ottomans restore it, adding a domed room above and a marble inscription.
- 1931
- The walls on both sides are cut for a road, leaving the gate standing alone.
Visiting Kyrenia Gate and the Nicosia walls
Allow about half an hour. The Kyrenia Gate (Girne Kapısı) stands in the walled city of Lefkoşa (Nicosia), not in Kyrenia. A car park is mapped about 50 m away, and the bus stand at the gate is about 50 m away.
