What to see at Derviş Paşa Mansion

  • Derviş Paşa Mansion (Derviş Paşa Konağı) is an L-plan house of two storeys, stone below and mudbrick above, round a wide courtyard with arcaded galleries.
  • The main room (baş oda) projects over the street and has a decorated ceiling.
  • The rooms are laid out as a house museum: bride's room, bedroom, dining room and loom room.

History of Derviş Paşa Mansion

1804–05
The house is built; its front door is dated AH 1219.
1869
The projecting main room is added; its ceiling bears this date.
1891
The owner, later called Derviş Paşa, publishes the first issue of Zaman, the first Turkish newspaper in Cyprus.
1988
The restored house opens as the Ethnography Museum on 21 March.

Visiting Derviş Paşa Mansion

Allow half an hour. The mansion is in Arabahmet, in the walled city of Lefkoşa (Nicosia). A car park is mapped about 50 m away, and intercity buses stop at Kyrenia Gate (Girne Kapısı), about 600 m on foot.
